Abstract

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the competency of Junior Nursing Officers (JNOs) and to determine which competencies needed improvement.

Method : The subjects included 223 JNOs working in military hospitals and 96 senior nursing officers(SNOs) who were capable of evaluating the competency of the JNOs.

Results : The results showed that JNO¡¯s gave themselves an average score of 4.9 out of 7 points for their level of competency, whereas the SNOs gave the JNOs a 4.33 average. Except for sub-domain of ¡¯Organizational Commitment¡¯, there were statistically significant differences between the scores given by the JNOs and the SNOs. The results of Importance-Performance analysis were as follows: ¡¯Nursing Leadership¡¯, ¡¯Personal development¡¯ and ¡¯Organizational Commitment¡¯ just require continued effort as they scored high on both importance and performance. ¡¯Professional Practice in Military Nursing¡¯ and ¡¯Task Performance¡¯ were given high priority but not performed enough. Lastly, ¡¯Military Knowledge¡¯ and ¡¯Competitiveness¡¯ were scored low on both importance and performance were considered to be lower priority. The competency level was significantly different according to the general characteristics of the religion, education experience, job satisfaction.

Conclusion : Based on the results, it is necessary to develop education programs to improve the JNOs¡¯s competency on those areas with higher priority.
